Connect Retell (voice engine)
Last updated: October 7, 2026
Retell is GodSetter's voice engine: it runs the live AI conversation on every call your agents make or answer. Each agency connects its own Retell account — there is no shared pool — so every call runs on your own Retell plan and shows up in your own Retell usage.
Connecting Retell is the first onboarding step for a reason: without it your agency can't create agents, and the outbound dispatcher skips your agency entirely — so nothing ever dials.
Before you start
- A Retell account with an active payment method — every minute of conversation is billed to your own Retell plan.
- The key is created in Retell → Settings → API Keys — that is where step 1 starts.
- Editor access on the Connections area — owner, admin, or a collaborator an admin gave editor rights to. Anyone else gets the save refused.
Step 1 — Copy your API key from Retell
In your Retell dashboard, open the API Keys section. Create a key if you don't have one yet, and copy it. Treat it like a password: anyone holding it can place calls billed to your Retell account.
Use the key marked as webhook key. Retell signs every webhook it sends to GodSetter (call started, call ended, call analysis, in-call tools) with the key marked Webhook in that list, and GodSetter checks the signature with the key you paste here. If they differ, every webhook is rejected: calls stay "in progress", outcomes and tags never arrive, and booking tools don't run. In the API Keys list, open the menu of the key you paste into GodSetter and choose Set as webhook key (only one key per Retell workspace carries that badge).
Step 2 — Paste it into Connections
In GodSetter, open Connections and find the Retell card ("AI voice agent runtime"). Paste the key into the "Retell API key" field. As the form itself notes: "Paste your Retell API key. It is validated before being saved."
Click Connect — or "Update key" if you're replacing an existing one.
Step 3 — Let the validation run
While the button shows "Validating…", GodSetter makes a real request to Retell using your key:
- Invalid key → you see "Invalid Retell API key. Check the key and try again." — and nothing is saved. If you already had a working key stored, it stays in place untouched.
- Valid key → "Retell connection saved successfully." The card status turns connected, with a "Validated on" date.
Step 4 — Check the connection status
- The key is stored encrypted for your agency and never displayed again — the card shows it masked.
- Everything voice-related now works through your account: creating agents, the in-browser web-call tester, and outbound and inbound calls.
- Number registration also runs on this key. Buying a number registers it on your Retell account automatically, so connect Retell before buying numbers — otherwise the number is purchased but left unregistered until you retry the registration from the Numbers page.
- Billing is yours. Concurrent-call capacity, per-minute rates and any voice add-ons are governed by your Retell plan, not by GodSetter.
Rotating the key
If you rotate or revoke the key on the Retell side, the stored copy stops working and calls will fail until you paste the new one. Use "Update key" on the same card — the new key goes through the same live validation before it replaces the old one. Mark the new key as the webhook key on Retell too, otherwise webhooks are rejected from that moment on.
Next steps
- Connect Twilio (telephony) — the second provider connection.
- Create your first agent — now that the voice engine is in place.
